Mahabaleshwar is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,353 meters (4,439 feet) above sea level in the Satara district of Maharashtra, beautifully nestled within the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO-recognized biodiversity hotspot. During the British colonial era in the 19th century, Mahabaleshwar gained prominence as the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency due to its pleasant climate and strategic location. British administrators and officers developed the town with planned roads, scenic viewpoints, gardens, libraries, and colonial-style bungalows to escape the intense heat of the plains. Iconic viewpoints such as Arthur’s Seat, Wilson Point, and Bombay Point were established during this period, many of which still retain their original charm and offer breathtaking panoramic views of valleys and cliffs. Mahabaleshwar is also revered as the origin of the Krishna River, one of India’s most sacred rivers, which flows eastward across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. This association with the Krishna River adds a deep spiritual dimension to the town, blending natural beauty with religious reverence.
