Even today, you can witness trucks and traders passing through the border gate, reflecting Dawki’s long-standing commercial importance. However, what truly transformed Dawki into a tourism hotspot is the breathtaking Umngot River. The river’s water is so crystal clear that the riverbed, stones, and even fish are visible to the naked eye. During winter, especially between November and February, the transparency reaches its peak — creating a magical illusion where boats seem to float mid-air. This rare natural phenomenon has made Dawki viral on social media and one of the most photographed destinations in Meghalaya tourism. Umngot River flows calmly between lush hills and dense vegetation, offering visitors a serene escape from city life. The surrounding environment is exceptionally clean because of strict local efforts to maintain ecological balance. The river is considered sacred by the local Khasi and Jaintia communities, and great care is taken to preserve its purity. Unlike many popular tourist rivers in India, plastic pollution is minimal here due to strong community awareness and responsible tourism practices. The cultural identity of Dawki is deeply influenced by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes. These indigenous communities follow a matrilineal system where lineage and inheritance pass through the female members of the family. Their traditions, colorful festivals, bamboo craftsmanship, and locally prepared fish-based cuisine add a rich cultural dimension to the travel experience.
